Avatar: This actor was homeless before the movie

Incredible, but true: before meeting James Cameron, a famous role in the Avatar saga was lagging behind.

In 1994, James Cameron wrote an 80-page screenplay called Avatar. This film, estimated at 100 million dollars, must go into production after the completion of Titanic. It was in the summer of 1997. The main roles «  which will seem real, but will not physically exist in the real world  » will be interpreted by six actors. At the time, technology was not fully capable of bringing the flora and fauna of Pandora to life. The project will therefore be put on hold for a long time.

In that time, James Cameron further refined the Avatar storyline. After that, he did a lot of research in Hollywood in order to find one of the film’s main roles, Officer Jake Sully. James’s path therefore crosses that of Sam Worthington. Although he enjoyed a certain popularity, this actor was not bankable enough in view of the Hollywood studios. He is also going through an existential crisis when he is allowed to audition in front of the cameras of the man who made Aliens. Indeed, the actor sells all his goods except his car which will serve as a roof for him to sleep. « I had sold everything I owned to my friends, because I didn’t like who I was (…) I needed to get the hell out. I lived in Sydney, and every time I went to a bar, I was recognized. I rebelled against that. », he had told the microphone of the site Variety. This rebellious attitude of Sam Worthington touched James Cameron’s heart.

An astronomical cachet for the star of Avatar

Did Sam Worthington imagine himself playing the lead role in an internationally successful film produced for a hundred million dollars? If he had such a dream, he can say thank you to James Cameron who knew how to give him a chance. Avatar was a worldwide hit. The success of the second opus has truly benefited the finances of Sam Worthington. According to GQ India, the actor would have received an amount of 110 million dollars for the role of Jake Sully. This sum contains his initial salary (10 million dollars) as well as a negotiated commission on all the receipts of the film. James Cameron can be jealous. Indeed, for The way of water, the American director had pocketed « only » 95 million dollars.
